Two Days in Munich

The second day is where the ticket money goes — and in Munich the day of the week decides how much of it you spend.

Day one

The one-day plan — Marienplatz, the market, the Asamkirche, the park and a beer garden.

Day two — and the Sunday rule

If day two is a Sunday, do museums. The Bavarian state collections charge a nominal admission on Sundays: the Alte Pinakothek, the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Brandhorst are all within a few minutes of each other in the Kunstareal.

If it is a Monday, do not. Most of them are closed. Go to the Deutsches Museum, which opens most Mondays, or spend the day outdoors.

Any other day, pick a palace: the Residenz in the centre, sold as three tickets with a combined option, or Nymphenburg out on the tram with its free park.

Day two, afternoon

Whatever you did not do in the morning, plus Odeonsplatz and Viscardigasse behind the Feldherrnhalle — the brass line in the paving that marks where people detoured to avoid saluting.

How the closures fall

Sunday: museums cheap, shops shut. Monday: museums shut, Deutsches Museum open. Saturday: buy anything you need, because Sunday you cannot.
