A stadium that changes colour, on the U-Bahn, with tours on non-match days and no way in on match days without a ticket.

What it costs

Free from the outside, and the outside is the point — the inflated panels light up, red for Bayern and white for the national team.

Arena tours and the FC Bayern Museum are ticketed, individually or combined. Neither runs on a match day.

When to go

Match tickets for Bayern are hard to get and the official resale platform is the only safe route. On non-match days the tour is straightforward and rarely sells out.

Getting there

U-Bahn U6 to Fröttmaning — the stadium is a signposted walk from the station and the journey from Marienplatz takes about twenty minutes.

If you only have an hour

Not enough, unless you are already at Fröttmaning — the round trip alone is forty minutes. If you are out here, do the exterior and go; the tour needs longer and the museum needs longer still.

What people get wrong

It is shared: Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich both played here originally, though 1860 have since left. And the colour-changing panels are not merely decorative — the club has to light them according to who is playing.
