The Alte Pinakothek

One of the great Old Master collections in Europe — and on a Sunday it costs almost nothing.

What it costs

Ticketed, and modest for what it holds. But the fact worth planning around: the Bavarian state collections charge a nominal admission on Sundays — a fraction of the weekday price, at the same museums.

That applies to the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek’s collection, the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Brandhorst and others in the same quarter. Temporary exhibitions are usually excluded.

When to go

Closed on Monday, like most of the Kunstareal. Sunday is cheap and correspondingly busy — go early. One evening a week it opens late, which is the quietest time of all.

Getting there

U-Bahn U2 to Königsplatz, or trams to Pinakotheken. Several major museums stand within a few minutes’ walk of each other here.

If you only have an hour

If it is a Sunday, this is nearly free, so go in even for an hour. Head for the Rubens rooms and Altdorfer’s Battle of Alexander. On a Monday it is shut — the Deutsches Museum is the answer instead.

What people get wrong

Visitors expecting a palace find a nineteenth-century gallery rebuilt after severe war damage — the scars in the brickwork of the facade were deliberately left visible. What it holds is the point: Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Leonardo, and one of the great Altdorfer paintings.
